TARGETED GRAZING

Prescribed grazing is the process of using livestock to consume vegetation, reducing flammable fuel in the areas grazed.

Animals are concentrated on target areas with portable fencing.  The length of time this takes will correlate with the amount of vegetation removed.

Goats (particularly Boer goats) are ideal for grazing the foothills of California.  The Boer goats’ origins in South Africa helps them to withstand the hot summers.  Their ability to consume woody, course vegetation is an ideal match for the brushy environment here.  The goat’s agility allows them to graze steep, rocky terrain.  Unlike cattle, goats do not “foul” waterways, because they avoid stepping in water and never “wallow” in their water source.

Our Boer and Boer mixes have been tested for the three diseases most commonly found in goats: C/L, CAE, and Johnes.  The goats are supplemented to ensure their mineral and protein requirements are met.  This supplementation  actually increases the amount of vegetation they can consume and helps to protect them from toxic plants.

Brush Bust'n Boers live up to their name, clearing brush, eradicating noxious weeds, and reducing fire risk.
